Quick n’ Dirty Summer Series; Mountain Bike Racing Done Right

For those of you who don’t know what Quick n’ Dirty is, here’s the short version:

It’s mountain bike racing done right.

No overly serious atmosphere. No gatekeeping. No need to overthink it. Just show up with a bike, pick your class, and get ready to be challenged and have a damn good time doing it.

The Quick n’ Dirty Summer Series at Lake Hodges has quietly become one of the staples of Southern California mountain bike culture. Week after week, riders of every level line up together for fast, fun, and legitimately challenging Thursday night racing that somehow manages to feel competitive and welcoming at the same time.

Whether you’re trying to race off the front, test your fitness, dust off the mountain bike after work, or simply survive your first race without exploding halfway through the lap, there’s a place for you here.

That’s the beauty of Quick n’ Dirty.

The series has classes for everyone; from beginners and junior racers all the way to expert fields, single speed masochists, drop bar riders, enduro racers, and even the legendary “Big Boned” category. Nobody is pretending this sport needs to fit neatly into one mold, and that’s part of what makes the atmosphere so good.

At its core, the Summer Series is about showing up consistently, riding hard, and building community around bikes.

The format is simple:

  • Affordable racing
  • Short enough to still make it home at a reasonable hour
  • Hard enough to humble you
  • Fun enough that you’ll probably sign up again the next week

That shared experience is what keeps people coming back.

The races take place at Lake Hodges in Escondido, which means fast trails, punchy climbs, dry Southern California dirt, and the kind of golden-hour light that almost makes you forget how hard your lungs are working. Almost.

And honestly, the best part might be what happens after the race.

People hang around. They talk bikes. Maybe they grab food from one of the vendors. Maybe they stay for a beer or two while the sun disappears behind the hills.

It feels less like “going to a race” and more like showing up to the local riding community’s weekly gathering; one that just happens to include a little suffering.

That’s why events like this matter.

They remind people that racing bikes doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes all it takes is a number plate, a start line, a few good trails, and a reason to push yourself a little harder than you normally would on a Thursday night.

If you’ve been curious about trying a mountain bike race, this is your sign.

Just show up.
