Seeing these bikes and builds out on course all weekend was a good reminder that modern gravel bikes have gotten seriously capable; fast, refined, and absolutely built to rip.
Belgian Waffle Ride California 2026 | The Hell of the North County
The 15th Annual Belgian Waffle Ride California rolled through North County again this year, bringing one of the most unique events in cycling right into our backyard. Starting and finishing at the Del Mar Polo Fields, BWR blends pavement, gravel, sand, steep climbs, and technical dirt into a race that’s become known as “The Hell of the North County.” It’s challenging, unpredictable, and unlike just about anything else on two wheels.
What makes BWR special isn’t just the racing; it’s the atmosphere surrounding the entire weekend. From the expo and community rides to seeing professional racers and everyday riders lining up together, the event feels more like a celebration of cycling than a traditional race. For those of us here in North County, it’s also a reminder of how lucky we are to have this kind of riding and community close to home.
Whether you’re a dedicated gravel racer, road rider curious about mixed terrain, or just looking for a new challenge, Belgian Waffle Ride California is worth experiencing at least once. The course changes every year, but the spirit stays the same; big adventure, hard riding, and a good time shared with a massive cycling community.
