Sometimes You Just Have to Show Up

There are plenty of reasons to show up for a group ride. Sometimes you want to get some miles in. Sometimes you’re looking for a hard day on the bike. Sometimes it’s about catching up with friends, meeting new people, or simply getting out and riding.

And every once in a while, Peter Sagan shows up.

Last year, Specialized Bikes brought three-time World Champion Peter Sagan to Cadence Cyclery Encinitas for a special ride with the North County San Diego cycling community.

For a rider whose career includes three consecutive road World Championships, seven Tour de France green jerseys, victories at Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, and one of the most recognizable personalities in modern professional cycling, seeing Sagan rolling out of a local bike shop in Encinitas was a little surreal.

But once everyone was on the road, it was also remarkably simple.

A bunch of people showed up to ride bikes together.

Riding with a World Champion

There were no race numbers or grandstands. This wasn't about watching professional cycling from behind a barrier or through a screen. Local riders had the opportunity to clip in, roll out from Cadence, and share the road with one of the most accomplished cyclists of his generation.

That's what made the day memorable.

Of course, having Peter Sagan there made this particular ride something special, but the experience also captured what we love about cycling in North County. Bikes have an unusual ability to bring people together who might otherwise never find themselves in the same place.

For a few hours, everyone gets to share the same roads.

There's Always Something Happening at Cadence

Special rides like this don't happen every week — having a three-time World Champion roll into town is a pretty tough act to follow — but there's almost always something happening at Cadence Cyclery.

Throughout the year, we host and support weekly group rides, community events, demo days, brand activations, and bigger rides with some of the companies and people that make cycling what it is.

Some rides are fast. Some are long. Some are social. Some will make you question whether you should have attacked that climb quite so early.

Every so often, something truly unique comes together.

That's part of what we want Cadence to be: not simply a place to buy a great bike or have one serviced, but a place where the local cycling community can come together and where memorable days on bikes have a chance to happen.

You don't necessarily need to know exactly what kind of experience you're going to have before you arrive.

You just need to show up.

Sometimes it's a Thursday night ride with friends. Sometimes it's a huge day in the saddle. Sometimes one of our brand partners has something special planned.

And apparently, sometimes you get to ride with Peter Sagan.
